How the church began

The Church's claims rest on events in Joseph Smith's life. Its own essays now discuss the hard parts openly, so we quote them.

The First Vision

Joseph Smith said he saw God and Jesus in 1820. His earliest written account, from 1832, describes it differently from the official 1838 account.

How the Book of Mormon was produced

The Church's essay says Joseph Smith often dictated the text by looking at a seer stone placed in a hat, the same kind of stone he had earlier used to look for buried treasure.

Plural marriage

Joseph Smith married many women, including some already married to other men and one who was 14. The Church's own essay says so.

Race and the priesthood

From 1852 until 1978 men of black African descent could not be ordained to the priesthood. The Church today disavows the theories once used to justify it.
